Hannah (Kate Winslet) loves being read to, and reading builds a bond in her new love affair with Michael (young – David Cross older - Ralph Fiennes) who loves reading to her. Suddenly, with no warning, Hannah disappears. For Hannah has a secret, and in post-war Germany that can be dangerous, as Michael will discover. Eight years later, Michael, back in Germany as a law-student, is observing the Nuremberg war crime trials where he is stunned to re-discover Hannah but in the witness box on trial. Together they must try to learn the old lessons of truth and reconciliation.
